Verse 1-4: On September 5, 2020, Todd Wagner, the founder and head pastor of Watermark church stepped back from leadership due to the need to deal with a “sin of pride” that had impacted his ability to be an effective leader in his church. In his presentation of why he was stepping back, Todd mentioned people had been asking him if he was ok, alluding to the fact that he might not be behaving in a manner that reflects grace for others. Has anyone ever had to correct you on your behavior as an adult? Do you think people would fear giving you feedback or do they think you’d welcome it?

Do you think John was right/wise to criticize Herod and Herodias for leaving their spouses to marry each other? How should a church respond when we see leaders fail morally?

Verse 5-12: A huge social injustice occurred when John the Baptist was beheaded as a party favor. Did Herod have the right to behead John? What drove Herod to behead John, even though he didn’t want to? Have you ever hurt someone because you had more concern about your pride and you considered there were minimal consequences for your actions?

Verse 13-14: What is Jesus’ response to John’s death?

When the world looks like it’s falling apart, what is the appropriate response of Christians? How do Christians deal with injustice?

Verse 15-21: How would you react if you were a disciple and Jesus told you to feed 5,000 people?

Do you feel unprepared to do God’s work? God calls us to step out in faith and do His good work, trusting Him to fill in the gaps. What are areas it’s hard to trust Jesus in, because the need seems too great but our means seem too small? Have you seen God provide when it seemed like a hopeless situation?

What is the significance of having leftover food to you?

Verse 22-23: If Jesus is God, why do you think he prayed? Why would Jesus spend time away from his disciples?

Verse 24-33: What is the biggest thing you’ve ever had to walk out in faith on?

Have you ever heard you can achieve anything if you just put your mind to it and believe in yourself? What is inspirational about that message? Do you think this saying is true? What can be achieved if you keep your eyes on Jesus? What are some doubts you have about God?
