God is Light

1 John 1

Verse 1-4: Have you ever purchased a product just because they had a great infomercial (Snuggie, Flex Tape, Clapper, ShamWow, OxyClean, George Foreman grill, ChiaPet, Ginsu Knife, etc)?

Are you more likely to buy a product because you have evaluated it as the best product or because someone told you to buy it? Why?

What is a more compelling reason to believe in Jesus to you, because it’s true or that it has changed the lives of people you know? Do people want to know Jesus because of your life and your story? How would you explain to a non-Christian why they should choose Jesus?

Verse 5-7: When you were a kid, did you ever dress up like someone? Who was it?

Is a person a doctor because they put on scrubs, a firefighter because they can sling an ax, or if a police officer because they wear a uniform? What separates a professional from someone who just dresses like one?

Can someone be a Christian and still walk in darkness? What separates a Christian from someone who just shows up to church like one? What does behavior have to do with someone’s relationship with God?

Verse 8-10: What was a difficult confession you had to make? What happened as a result of the confession?

Why is confession such an important part of the Christian faith? Why shouldn’t we just hide our issues from others so we look better? What does confession do for us? What are we afraid confession will do to us?

The BTK killer told his pastor that he was a good man “who just did bad things.” He was a leader in his church. He was a Boy Scout volunteer. He was a doting father. How can a person who did so many good things be simultaneously so bad?

Are there areas in your life that don’t align with God’s standard? Do you have friends in your life that help hold you accountable to God’s standard? What is God calling you to lay at his feet today?
