Watch: “The New Covenant

Questions for Saturday Morning:

  1. Is the relationship we have with God as Christians in the new covenant the same as the relationship between Israel and God in the old covenant? Why or why not?
  2. Galatians 5:1: Paul states that Christ has set the people of the church of Galatia free. What are they free from? Hint: What was Paul getting at in his example of Hagar and Sarah?
  3. Galatians 5:2-3: How can Paul say that if the Galatians accepted circumcision that Christ is of no advantage? Why can’t Christians have it both ways?
  4. Galatians 5:4-6: What are some crazy things you’d done to impress a girl? What are some things you do now to try to impress your wife? Do you think your relationship with God works like this?
  5. Galatians 5:7-9: Paul makes a statement in verse 9: “A little leaven leavens the whole lump.” Our modern corollary might be “one bad apple spoils the bunch.” What is Paul talking about? What is Paul trying to warn us about?
  6. Galatians 5:10-12: Paul has taken his stance against conforming to the old covenant to the point that he is undergoing persecution because of it. Why do we not have the same level of reaction to the old covenant?
  7. Galatians 5:13-15: Read through some of the laws in Deuteronomy 22. Balance this against Galatians 5:14. Are these passages compatible?
  8. Galatians 5:16-17: What does Paul have against our flesh? Aren’t our bodies made by God? If God made it, why would following our natural desires be a bad thing?
  9. Galatians 5:19-21: Why do the works of the flesh express themselves like this? And what does Paul mean when he says that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God?
  10. Galatians 5:22-24: Why do you think there are so many laws against things, but there are so few laws for things? Why are there laws against bad behaviors but few laws for good behaviors? Is it possible to create a healthy nation if we just had enough laws against all of the bad behaviors?
  11. Galatians 5:25-26: How do we avoid the temptation of pride? How do we spot it? How do we fix it?
  12. Do you have a faith that is freeing? Is your faith a list of don’ts or a list of dos?
