John Ortberg:

Forgiving is not the same thing as excusing. Forgiveness is what is required precisely when there is no good rationale to explain away why someone did what they did. When an action is excusable, it doesn’t require forgiveness. Continue reading Forgiveness

Verse 1-2: Have you ever had a problem with your spouse and you went into the conversation ready to have a fight? How did that turn out? How would you respond differently this time? Is your version of winning a fight where the other person sees how right you are or is it that you have a stronger relationship? Continue reading 2 Corinthians 2

Verse 1-4: Do you have any advice on good financial planning?

Famous quotes about planning:

“The time to repair the roof is when the sun is shining.” – J.F.K

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” – Antoine de Saint-Exupery

“Someone’s sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” – Warren Buffett

Are you planning and preparing to be a blessing to others or are you waiting for it to happen organically? Is it important to plan and prepare? Continue reading 1 Corinthians 16

Verse 1-2: Read Matthew 13:19-23. What is it that we need to hold firmly to? What happens if we don’t?

19 When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the path. 20 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy, 21 yet he has no root in himself but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.[b] 22 As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful. 23 As for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it. He indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.

Verse 1-3: The idols we have in our life don’t say anything to us, but they can say a lot about us. Grant Thompson, the YouTube star and the creator of the “King of Random” YouTube channel, died recently. A lot of his fellow YouTube creators collaborated to create a video that spoke to how Grant was more than just a guy who wanted to create a popular channel, he was a family man, a mentor, an educator, and a friend. Grant chose not to make his channel and fame his idol and handed over a lot of his responsibilities for his channel to others in October 2018 so he could spend more time with his family.

Verse 1: What are some ways you want people to imitate you? What are some things you hope people do not imitate? Are you an example we should be holding up as a person who “gives no offense…, pleases everyone in everything [you] do, seeking not [your] own advantage, but that of many, that they may be saved”?

Verse 2: What traditions are worth holding onto? Why? Continue reading 1 Corinthians 11
