Verse 1-2: What are some of the most notable credentials that you are proud of? What are some of the cool things you get to put on your resume? Do you have anything that you would put on your resume that speaks to how people can know you are a follower of Jesus?

Verse 3-4: If God is a God of comfort, why is life so hard? What cans we possibly gain by going through hardship?

Verse 5-7: What are some major events in the last 100 years that define a generation? Are common struggles important for bringing people together? Why or why not?

In what way can Christians use their struggles to comfort one another?

Verse 8-11: What’s the closest you of a dear friend/relative ever been to death or disaster? How does a person’s relationship with God change during a disaster? Why? What do disasters do for our prayer life?

Verse 12-14: What are some examples or earthly wisdom? How do we recognize it? What is its allure?

    Earthly wisdom examples:

  • Follow your heart.
  • Drink responsibly.
  • All you have is your health.
  • You can’t judge me.
  • I can do what I want so long as I’m not hurting anyone else.
  • Pursue happiness.
  • You need to find your own truth.
  • I’ll be a better person when I get married.

Quote from R. C. Sproul:

“Humanism was not invented by man, but by a snake who suggested that the quest for autonomy might be a good idea.”

Verse 15-16: What is the value of spending personal time with someone as opposed to communicating remotely? Why does it matter? Why did Jesus spend time visiting us in person?

Verse 17-20: What are the promises of God? What does God not promise us? If life is so full of hardship, how can we know God still cares for us?

Another good quote from R. C. Sproul:

“Why do bad things happen to good people? That only happened once, and He volunteered.”

Verse 21-22: What do you believe it takes to get God’s seal? How do we know we have it? Do you have a plan / explanation to help a non-Christian become a Christian?
