Verse 2: What traditions are worth holding onto? Why?
Verse 3: Why does Paul talk of this hierarchy of leadership in verse 3: Christ is head of man, man is head of woman, God is head of Christ? Why does he not state that Chris is the head of man and woman? What’s the implication for men? What is the implication for women? What does this verse reveal about the character of God?
Verse 4-6: Paul is indicating here that it’s a disgrace to remove the distinction between man and woman. Why is this important? What does American culture say today about distinctions between man and woman? Does culture align with God’s will? Is Paul’s teaching irrelevant (or even offensive) in the 21st century?
Verse 7-9: How is a man the image and glory of God? How is woman the glory of man? In what way is woman created for the sake of man (notice the distinction that woman is created for the sake of a man, but for the sake of man)?
Verse 10: What authority does woman have in this verse? What does this have to do with head coverings?
Verse 11-12: These verses speak to God’s plan for each person’s dependency on others. All things are created to be connected to everything else and ultimately connected to God. Do you think society will get better if we break down hierarchy and just increase communication?
Verse 13-16: Do you think that the distinction between man and woman is evident in nature? If so, how is it possible that people believe that sex is a social construct? What does this say about our culture’s beliefs today?
Verse 17-18: In what ways to churches come together for the better? In what ways can we come together for the worst? How do we avoid the worst in church?
Verse 19: Have you ever gone into a discussion ready to cause division? How did that work out for you? When disagreements break out in a group of people, who are the people who come out looking the wisest?
Verse 20-22: What are some ways in which we’ve shown contempt for God by thinking about ourselves first? How do you make a determination of how much time and resources you can spend on yourself versus others? When is it appropriate to call each other out?
Verse 23-26: Why do you think Jesus instituted communion? Why is it important?
Verse 27-30: Have you ever acted thoughtlessly or carelessly around your spouse or your friends? How does this bring judgment upon ourselves?
Verse 31-32: What’s something God is disciplining you over this week? How do you perceive God’s judgment?
Verse 33-34: What’s the difference between a man and a gentleman? Is striving to be a gentleman something that’s worth striving for? Why or why not?
